Titanium Dioxide
Titanium Dioxide ( Anatase & Rutile )
[ Chemical Name ]: Titanium Dioxide, C.I. Pigment White
[ Formula ]: O=Ti=O
[ Molecular Weight ]: 79.8658
[ CAS No.]: 13463-67-7; 1317-80-2; 1317-70-0
[ Description ]:
The main difference between the two types is the extent of distortion interconnection of octahedrons.
The different crystal cell structure leads to the different physical and chemical properties from the thermodynamic angle, rutile is the most stable crystal form, with a melting point of 1870 C, Anatase belongs to low-temperature phase type can converted to rutile at 500 to 600 C. The essence of TiO2 crystal transformation is the structural rearrangement of octahedron, The arrangement of atoms in rutile crystal structure is more compact, Harder with higher density and greater light scattering as well.
Therefore, rutile is a commonly used as white coating and anti ultraviolet material, which has a very strong shielding effect on ultraviolet light and is widely used in industrial coatings and cosmetics while anatase mainly for photocatalyst material against environmental pollution.
Rutile type is coated with inorganic compounds of silicon and aluminum oxide and might be specially treated in organic way.
